On the first day I met with Jimmy Walker, Danny Fisher and Abby Mock at Pacesetters indoor facility, which is a fifth-teen minute drive away from the clubs outdoor fields in Sylvania. In the meeting I received a briefing of what the internship would include, they stressed that I would be busy and to not be afraid about asking for help.

After my briefing, one of my first tasks were to organize registrations for the players that registered for the summer academy and Jr. Summer academy. Jimmy had already gave a scale of the various abilities of the players, because most of them he or another staff member had coached before. This made my job a lot easier, simply I put them into similar age groups and anyone that was technically advanced than their own age, I moved them up. These summer camps would run for four weeks on a Tuesday and Thursday evening, from 6pm – 8pm. Furthermore, I was responsible for setting up the camp structure, equipment and refreshments.

Three days a week I would shadow Jimmy Walker as he coached Pacesetters U18s boys, preparing them for the state cup. The previous year they lost in the final, so it was a great experience to see the desire and man management that he coached with to educated and motivate the players. Today Jimmy put me on the spot and gave me the opportunity to take the passing drills. I started the team off with a simple five against two passing drill giving them a target of consecutive passes to make, before increasing the target number as they got better.

Today I spent the majority of the day with Robin Lutz, who is the clubs uniform and gear coordinator. He showed me difficulties of ordering gear from Adidas, the clubs apparel sponsor, as well as, dealing with returns from players that have issues with sizes. Before today, I didn’t see what could be so difficult about the job. Pacesetter has just under 500 players on their roster in various age groups, and it can become difficult if orders and messed up by receiving the wrong color or sizes for example. Throughout the day, Robin received multiple phone calls from parents that had got the wrong size for their children and wanted an exchange for the correct size. I found it interesting to see how well she handled these situations from the parents and communicating with Adidas.

Today is the start of summer academy and Jr. Summer academy. I got to the indoor facility thirty minutes early with the other coaching staff to set up and go over the camp structure for the first two weeks. Over the weekend, I sat down with Jimmy and gave him my ideas on what could be our topics and how we develop the skills of the players attending the camp. After putting our heads together, we came up with a station system. Four coaches would choose their topic and we would simply rotate four groups of campers every fifth-teen minutes. This way they’re getting enough repetitions that will help them develop their skills. For the last forty-five minutes we would allow the campers to scrimmage with minimal stoppages, to see what progression they have made since the start of the session.

With the English Premier League camp a month away and high in demand. A Staff meeting took place today to discuss structure and the organization of the camp. The EPL camp is one of the most unique soccer camps in America. Through Jimmy’s connections in England, he is able to bring over five ex-premier league players that come over and coach at the Pacesetter soccer fields in Sylvania, Toledo. As a group, we divided the ninety players that had signed up for the camp before the cutoff date into age groups. U8’s–U12’s camps times would be from 9 am – 11am, U13’s–U16’s from 1pm–3pm and High school players from 5pm-7pm. Because there are some many campers and only five EPL coaches, each EPL coach would get two assistant coaches to work with them. Some of the assistant coaches coaching at the high school camp, were college coaches. Which is a great opportunity for the campers with aspirations of playing at the collegiate level.

When campers sign up for any Pacesetter camp they are required to give us their t-shirt size for a camp T-shirt. So today Robin and I, sat down and ordered t-shirts for the academy and Jr. Academy campers. There is a local printing store in the area that have established a good relationship with Pacesetter. Pacesetter have been extremely satisfied with the company's services. The club ordered t-shirts for the forty players participating in the camp, these t-shirts will be handed out on the last day of camp.

Today was physically and mentally demanding. Danny Fisher, the director of girls’ soccer at the club also acts as the grounds man for the two pacesetter fields. This morning, I was required to cut the grass and mark the fields. This was a job that I thought was very simple, little did I know, how sensitive and awkward to control the line marker was when making curved lines. This job was very time consuming, but I got there in the end.

Today is the start of the English Premier League camp, at this camp I will do a lot more shadowing and assisting, unlike the academy camp where I am the head coach. Throughout the week, I will be assisting different coaches. Today, I assisted Jim Barron, a former Chelsea FC goalkeeper. This was an unforgettable experience because I learnt a number of new drills for various ability levels. In addition to that, the campers fed of Jim’s high energy levels and preformed to an extraordinary level.

Today my internship came to an end. There was some long and grueling days and complicated moments, but with the help of the Pacesetter staff it became enjoyable. Jimmy and I sat down and discussed what I needed to do excel in this field of work. I recall him saying that, “you have to be willing to learn all of the time. Even when things are going well, there is always a new way to get your message across to your players or staff”. Jimmy demonstrated what he told me numerous times throughout my internship. For example, one of his U18’s boys found it difficult to understand the concept of holding and changing his run to beat the offside trap. Jimmy worked with this particular player in a one on one environment, it seemed like this player absorbed information better when this way and finally grasped it.
